What exactly is tofu?
Tofu is a plant based food made of condensed soy milk that is pressed into solid white blocks. Like most soya products, it has its origin in China, where it has been consumed for over 2,000 years.
Its texture, neutral taste and protein content make it a popular meat replacement. For this recipe, tofu provides a great vegan alternative to duck.
Tofu’s health benefits
Tofu is a versatile ingredient with many health benefits. It’s a lovely source of protein and contains several anti-inflammatory, antioxidant phyto-chemicals making it a great addition to an anti-inflammatory diet. Tofu is also a valuable plant source of iron and calcium– in addition to fibre, potassium, magnesium, copper and manganese.
We love pan-frying tofu and it is ideal for making this vegan hoisin tofu. Pan-frying is probably the simplest and quickest method for this recipe. It will save you time in the kitchen and result in crispy, golden-brown tofu with a lot less fuss.
